He presently serves on the Board of Directors of General Motors, Sprint, and the Bloomberg Philanthropies Foundation, and as an adjunct Professor at Princeton University.

Professor and Head of Materials Chemistry, University of Cambridge; Fellow of Trinity Hall. Over 25 years of research experience in materials chemistry, solid state ionics, electrochemistry and metal production, refining and recycling. Professor Kumar has published over 300 papers, 15 patents and several hundred project reports. He is the Editor-in-chief of the Institute of Materials, Mining & Metallurgy journal on "Mineral processing & Extractive Metallurgy". Much of his research has led to commercial processes.
